The four most prominent members of the family are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Blanc. Pinot Noir is the big brother; the one with the highest reputation and a cult of wine-drinking devotees around the world. Pinot Gris is probably the next most famous, though it may be best known in its Italian iteration, Pinot Grigio. Pinot Meunier gets very little press on it's own, but plays an important supporting role in Champagne, and can really sing on those occasions when it does get to play the lead. And Pinot Blanc gets virtually no attention at all, which is a pity, because with careful winemaking, it can make some lovely wines, especially in places like Alsace and Germany.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of these varieties and several others besides are mutations of Pinot Noir. Except. As it turns out, the Pinot genome is so unstable that virtually any variety of Pinot can occur as a mutation of any other variety of Pinot, and because Pinot is such an ancient variety no one can really be sure which came first. Not that primogeniture matters much, when there's so much interesting variety to explore in the glass.
